Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades: close on the map, not instant

Plan the FLL-to-Port Everglades transfer around luggage, port security, the correct entrance, and your cruise check-in deadline.

By ViaMetr Editorial Team Published September 14, 2026 Updated September 14, 2026

The short answer

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is the natural airport to check first for Port Everglades. The port says FLL is 1.8 miles away, while Broward County describes the ride as about ten minutes. Neither number is a curb-to-ship promise.

Port Everglades advises allowing 45 minutes to one hour for the transfer process from FLL. Its explanation includes claiming luggage, boarding transportation, clearing the port security checkpoint, checking bags curbside, and completing terminal formalities. Use that process estimate—not the bare drive time—when comparing flights.

Why a two-mile transfer still needs a plan

The route has several separate stages:

  1. leave the aircraft and claim checked bags;
  2. reach the correct FLL pickup area;
  3. load a vehicle that fits the group and luggage;
  4. enter Port Everglades through a security checkpoint;
  5. reach the assigned cruise terminal;
  6. hand off bags and complete cruise-line check-in.

A short drive reduces road exposure. It does not remove baggage or terminal deadlines.

Transfer options

Taxi or rideshare

A direct ride is the simplest structure for many small groups. Confirm the pickup zone at your arrival terminal and order a vehicle for the luggage volume. Enter the cruise terminal when known. Live price and wait time are dynamic.

Hotel or cruise transfer

Broward County says there are no free airport-to-port shuttles. A hotel or cruise package may include a transfer, but verify the exact airport, date, pickup point, luggage rules, and terminal before treating it as included.

Prearranged vehicle

This can reduce same-day pickup uncertainty for a larger party or mobility equipment. Confirm wait time, flight-delay handling, child seats, cancellation, and whether the quoted price covers the whole group.

Rental car

A rental car is usually a broader pre- or post-cruise decision, not the shortest transfer method. Include the return location, fuel, toll handling, parking, and the trip from the return desk to the terminal.

Port entrance and identification

Port Everglades publishes three entrances: Southeast 17th Street at Eisenhower Boulevard, State Road 84 east of U.S. 1 at Spangler Boulevard, and I-595 East at Eller Drive. The port says visitors age 18 and older must present appropriate identification at the security checkpoint and vehicles are subject to search.

Do not choose an entrance from an old blog post. Confirm the ship and terminal, then follow current port wayfinding and cruise-line instructions.

Same-day departure flight after the cruise

The airport warns that cruise-day terminals can be crowded and that airlines may accept checked baggage only within their own pre-departure window. A very late flight can therefore create a long airport wait; a very early flight can fail because debarkation, baggage, ground transfer, and airline check-in are not under one clock.

Use the cruise line’s debarkation guidance and the airline’s check-in rule for your itinerary. ViaMetr does not name one universal safe flight time.

FLL or MIA for a Port Everglades cruise?

FLL wins on proximity. MIA can still be rational when the flight schedule, party price, or disruption recovery is materially better. Port Everglades’ FAQ gives a much longer transfer allowance from MIA than from FLL. Compare:

  • total airfare including bags and seats;
  • airport-to-port transport for the whole party;
  • hotel buffer;
  • arrival and departure schedule margin;
  • the cost of a missed sailing or flight.

A fare difference is useful only after the ground route is included.

Quick checklist

  • Ship and terminal confirmed
  • Cruise check-in deadline saved
  • FLL arrival terminal and pickup zone checked
  • Vehicle sized for people plus luggage
  • Port entrance and identification ready
  • 45–60 minute transfer process protected, plus any extra flight buffer
  • Return-flight timing checked against debarkation and airline bag acceptance
